Not because people choose badly. Because they choose a name, one they’ve heard of, one a friend mentioned, one that came up cheapest, without knowing that Bali’s areas are so different from one another that booking the wrong one can hand you an entirely different holiday from the one you’d imagined.
The island looks small on a map. It is not small in traffic. Where you stay in Bali decides what you actually do here, and villas make that choice matter even more, because you’ll spend real time in the place rather than just sleeping in it.
Which is also why the villa itself has quietly become part of the holiday rather than the place you return to at the end of it. Seminyak, Legian and Kuta: The Easiest to Start
Three names, one long stretch of sand, three quite different holidays.
Seminyak is where most first-timers should go. Good restaurants within walking distance, boutiques worth the browse, beach clubs, sunset drinks served by someone considerably more stylish than you, and enough infrastructure that nothing feels like an expedition. Legian is the same beach with the volume down and better value, this is the family stretch, wide and flat and swimmable. Kuta is cheaper again, busier, younger, and closest to shopping malls like Beachwalk, Bali Galeria, and Discovery, and Waterbom, the single most useful attraction on the island if you are travelling with children.
The honest bit: these three get treated as interchangeable and they are not. People book Kuta on price expecting Seminyak, arrive, and spend the first day quietly recalibrating. Look at the actual street, not just the postcode.
This is Bali’s dining capital, which makes the most luxurious thing you can do here slightly counterintuitive: stay in. After four nights of walking to dinner, booking a private chef in your villa is a genuine relief, and if you’re in Legian with small children, it solves the nightly problem of persuading a four-year-old to remain seated in a restaurant for ninety minutes. Canggu and Pererenan: Beach Clubs, Cafés, and the Most Photographed 4km in Indonesia
Canggu is what people picture when they picture Bali now, which is both its appeal and its problem.
It splits into three. Batu Bolong is the busy heart; surf, cafés, Old Man’s, Motel Mexicola, and even Luigi’s, it’s wall-to-wall everything. Berawa is smarter and home to the bigger beach clubs like Atlas or FINNS. Pererenan is the quieter one, still holding onto rice fields, with excellent restaurants and noticeably better villa rates. For a villa stay, Pererenan is the pick almost every time.
The honest bit: the growth in Batu Bolong has thinned some of what made people love it. If your image of Canggu is from 2018, adjust accordingly. It’s still brilliant. It’s just no longer sleepy, and anyone who tells you that, hasn’t been recently.
It also, unavoidably, has the most photogenic part of the island, rice fields, black sand, and light that does something absurd at about half five. If you’re going to book a photography session anywhere in Bali, book it here, and book it in Pererenan rather than the busier beaches. It works for couples, for groups, and for anyone who’s realised that four years of holidays have produced no photographs with them actually in them.

Ubud: Rice Fields, Wellness, and Slowing Down on Purpose
Ubud is the cultural centre and the one people fall hardest for.
Rice terraces, temples, art, excellent restaurants, sweet bars, adventures everyone loves, jungle views, and mornings that make you reconsider your entire employment situation. It’s also the best value in Bali for villas, the same money that buys a room in Seminyak buys a private pool and a valley here.
The honest bit: Ubud is not a beach. I say this with the weariness of someone who has said it many times. It’s an hour and a half from the coast on a good day, and it should be one half of a trip, not the whole of it. Stay slightly outside the centre, too. Penestanan, Campuhan, the Sayan valley, because central Ubud has traffic and broken pavements and is considerably more charming when you’re not walking through it at four in the afternoon.
Ubud is the wellness capital, and here’s the practical case for having the massage come to you rather than the other way round: Ubud’s spas involve a drive on winding roads. You arrive hot and bothered, you leave beautifully relaxed, and then you get back in the car. An in-villa massage, typically around US$45 for two hours at the time of writing, and negates the entire journey. You finish, you get in the pool, you speak to nobody. This is the correct order of operations.

Insider tip: book it for late afternoon, after the rice fields and before dinner. Not after a long lunch, unless you’ve paid for a nap.

Also Worth Considering
Sanur is the quiet one, and people call it Snore like it’s an insult. It isn’t. Calm swimmable water, a flat beachfront path made for bikes and grandparents, sunrise instead of sunset, good restaurants without the queue, and boats to the Nusa islands leaving from the doorstep. It’s the most sensible choice for families and multigenerational trips, and it’s close to the airport, which matters more than people think on departure day. It’s also where a family photography session makes the most sense, twenty minutes on the sand at sunrise is achievable for everyone, including the relatives who won’t be climbing a clifftop. Book a photographer by the hour and take the pressure off the family influencer.
Bukit, Jimbaran & Uluwatu, the dramatic end of the island: limestone cliffs, serious surf, the best sunsets in Bali, and villas with views that justify their price tag. Jimbaran adds the seafood grills on the sand. The honest bit is that the Bukit is spread out and you’ll drive to almost everything, including the other thing in Uluwatu. Which is exactly why a private chef earns its place here more than anywhere else, when dinner is a 25-minute traffic jam each way, having it on your terms, stops being indulgent and starts being obvious.
Insider tip: in Sanur, shoot at sunrise, the beach is empty and the light is soft. On the Bukit, do the opposite and hold the villa table for sunset.

Planning a Villa Stay Without the Faff
- Stay longer in fewer places. Three days, one area. Five days, two. A week, still two. The packing is not the holiday.
- Plan by traffic, not distance. Check the route at the hour you’d actually travel it, not at 6am on a Sunday.
- Message the villa host before booking anything to the villa. Some have their own chef and therapist arrangements.Two minutes now prevents an awkward conversation in a sarong later.
- Book chefs and photographers early in July, August and over New Year. The good ones are busy for the reason they’re good.

Frequently Asked Questions About Where to Stay in Bali
Seminyak is the easiest first base. It’s walkable, well-served, and close enough to everything else to feel connected. Pair it with a few nights in Ubud and you've seen two genuinely different sides of the island.
Canggu for beach clubs, cafés and a younger crowd. Seminyak for restaurants, shopping and easier logistics. Canggu has better scenery but yet challenging traffic.
