Tenganan is one of East Bali’s most culturally significant places — a Bali Aga village where traditions predate Hindu influence and continue almost unchanged today. Visiting feels like stepping into a living museum, with quiet lanes, ancient architecture, and a strong sense of community woven into everyday life.
The village is best known for its rare double ikat textiles, painstakingly handwoven and found only in Tenganan. Local artisans are happy to explain the process, and you’ll see weaving studios, family compounds, and small workshops as you wander. It’s a peaceful place to walk, learn, and browse locally made handicrafts.
Respect is important here. Dress modestly, move slowly, and be mindful when taking photos. Tenganan isn’t a staged cultural attraction — it’s a community preserving one of Bali’s oldest ways of life.
Location: Karangasem, East Bali
Tip: Visit in the morning for cooler temperatures and a quieter village atmosphere.
