Bali’s new venues never cease to amaze and Merlins Magic, is yet another show stopper.
Ubud is renowned for its out-of-the-box dining venues so it makes perfect sense that Merlins Magic is located in the town. Upon arrival you know Merlins is different! The lobby is a magic shop selling trinkets, guidebooks, pills and potions. Not sure what you need to become a magical being? Then turn the pages of the magician’s guide to find your recommended potion.
Continue upstairs to the impressive dining room resembling the wizard’s private chamber with a giant glass dome over the large wood-carved table that seems to merge of Balinese and Medieval styles.
Our group of three decided to sample and share the kitchen creations from the Herbology menu with all ingredients fresh from Bali!
While we ordered mainly vegetarian there are still choices for carnivores. The food impressed right from the golden turmeric focaccia served as welcome bread with 3 kinds of butter, sambal matah, herb and black garlic. The cassava rendang molen was a Balinese twist on an empanada . we indulged in cassava again with a serving of the tempura-style fries. The tortellini was melting in your mouth fresh and guilt-free since it was combined with a light moringa anagata cheese sauce. Our ‘ must try ‘ recommendation is the Canang dessert. Carefully sculpted to resemble a Balinese offering known as canang, the flavours were a taste explosion. Accompanied by Malbec gelato (yes Malbec the wine !) we had never seen or tasted a dessert quite like this!
Another unique twist is that guests are invited to perform to entertain friends and fellow diners. Not only limited to magic skills guests are paid in high vibes currency which can be exchanged for a meal. Merlins Magic will soon be a regular haunt for Ubudians wanting a more artistic rendezvous than the usual bar scene.
With a speakeasy bar accessed through a bookcase behind the retail shop, regular performances will be a draw for the cocktail bar that has its own magical twists.
